Mimis, a young provincial cafe owner, emigrates to Athens when his area is expropriated by a large tourist company, so as not to be forced to work as a waiter there. In Athens, with the help of a friend from the army, Aristides, he tries to buy his own business, but the money from the forced expropriation is small and the purchase is postponed. Aristides's sister-in-law, Toula, also lives in his house, working as a seamstress to make ends meet. Mimis asks her to marry him and they are soon married.
